About Us: Volunteers and Interns The Small Press Center is now accepting applications for interns and volunteers. If you are interested in becoming involved with independent publishing, here are a few projects the Small Press Center needs assistance with: 1. The 2006 Independent and Small Press Book Fair, to be held December 2nd and 3rd in midtown Manhattan. 2. General office work - clerical work, database entry, assisting with mailings, updating publisher's records and books etc. 3. Publicity, Marketing and Public Relations- helping to write and produce press and promotional materials, assisting with the editing of the newsletter, direct mail letters, organizing displays and special exhibits. 4. Fund-raising - organize membership campaigns, researching foundations etc, assisting with our 20th anniversary fundraising activities. 5. SPC website development: write and update material to be posted on the website. 6. Publishing Reference Center and ABA Library: overhaul the collections, obtain more books, produce handouts and tip sheets on publishing. 7. Public programs: the Center runs a number of publishing related programs throughout the year that we seek assistance with -- workshops, lectures, interviews exhibits and the annual book fair. These positions are unpaid, but for the intern, this will provide a useful introduction to publishing. For the volunteer, this is an opportunity to help a small non-profit educational publishing organization, where your contribution will make a difference. To find out more or to set up an interview, please call 212.764.7021 or e-mail info@smallpress.org. (If you are a volunteer, with specific skills to offer, please mention them in your enquiry.) At the center of the small press movement since it’s founding in 1984 by Whitney North Seymour Jr., the Small Press Center is located in a literary landmark building at 20 West 44th Street. For twenty years, the Small Press Center has served as a resource for independent publishers, writers and other creators, encouraging excellence in publishing. The Center offers educational programs, sponsors the annual Small Press Book Fair, and maintains a reference library at its mid-Manhattan location. The Center is co-founder, with the Publishers Marketing Association (PMA), of Small Press Month. A non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization, the Center is an educational program of the General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen of the City of New York.
