Nineteenth Annual Independent and Small Press Book Fair
The Nineteenth Annual Independent and Small Press Book Fair will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, December 2nd, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, December 3rd. The Fair will take place in the landmark building of the General Society Library of Mechanics and Tradesmen, at 20 West 44th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues, in Manhattan. Admission to the Fair continues to be free, though a one dollar donation is encouraged.
The Book Fair is one of the most notable literary events of the year. With over one hundred cutting edge presses from the U.S and abroad, exhibiting some of the most distinguished books in contemporary literature, and another hundred showcasing their titles, the Fair truly highlights the diversity and wealth of the independent publishing world today. The 2005 Fair drew nearly 3,000 visitors, and 115 of the nation's most well-respected independents.
Each year, the Fair also features a wide variety of panels, events, and talks focusing on contemporary events, while emphasizing their effect on the publishing industry as well as on literary trends. Included in 2005, was a talk on The U.S. in Iraq, during which noted journalist Christian Parenti and Commentary's Gary Rosen discussed U.S interventionism in general, and Iraq in particular. We also hosted panels such as Tips on How to Get a Literary Agent and Publisher; An Interview with Luc Sante by Charlotte Abbott; The Politics of Culture: the Role of City Government in Local Culture; The Left is Right: the Rise of the Independent Media; Captured: A Look at Lower East Side Film; and Putting Your Passion Into Print: Getting Your Book Published Successfully.
We are currently working on the programming for this year's Fair. A list of events will be posted online early November.
