Dorothy Parker: What Fresh Hell is this? The Small Press Center and the General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen are pleased to host a lecture entitled "Dorothy Parker: What Fresh Hell is this?" This is the final lecture in a 5-part series on the Algonquin Round Table, entitled "Wit's End on West 44th Street." The series celebrates an extraordinary time in American literature, an era that was dominated by the creative humorists who were part of the Round Table and The New Yorker. Acclaimed biographer Marion Meade will speak about the life of Dorothy Parker on Tuesday, April 13th, 2004 from 6 to 7:30 pm. Marion Meade is the author of a number of biographies including Dorothy Parker:What Fresh Hell is This? and The Unruly Life of Woody Allen. In her talk, Meade revisits her highly regarded biography to explore what made (and makes) Dorothy Parker so funny. Queen of the Round Table, Dorothy Parker is still considered to be one of the sharpest and darkest wits America ever produced. With her wisecracking verses and stories, she shocked her contemporaries in the twenties. Her humor remains legendary eighty years later. Ms. Meade is also the author of the soon-to-be-released Bobbed Hair and Bathtub Gin, a group portrait of four writers: Dorothy Parker, Zelda Fitzgerald, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and Edna Ferber. The book is a vibrant mixture of literary scholarship, social history, and gossip in the study of a period that continues to intrigue and captivate readers. To register, please send payment of $15 ($5 for students) to: The General Society, 20 West 44th Street, New York, NY 10036, Attn: Lecture Series; or call 212-840-1840 for other payment options.
