Emerging Voices: Writers Published by Groundbreaking Independent Presses

Hundreds of important literary voices would never be heard if it were not for the independent publisher willing to take a risk on emerging writers, by publishing and actively supporting their work.

Wednesday, March 29, at 6:30pm

Seven Stories Press, one of the country’s leading and most highly thought of independent publishers, specializes in literary fiction and timely, informative nonfiction. One of the many voices that Seven Stories has brought to public attention is Lee Stringer, author of the acclaimed memoir, Grand Central Winter. Stringer's second book, Sleepaway School, released in paperback this spring, poignantly documents the journey of his childhood. Seven Stories publisher Dan Simon will introduce Lee Stringer, who will talk about his life and work.

Wednesday, April 19, at 6:30pm

Akashic Books actively seeks out diverse, original writers, and is considered to be one of the most impressive and adventurous indie presses in the United States. Publisher Johnny Temple will showcase the work of three recently published Akashic writers: award-winning Lauren Sanders, whose book, With or Without You, is "a wickedly crafted whydunit"; Marlon James, whose warmly-received debut novel, John Crow’s Devil, describes the fierce battle between two flawed Jamaican preachers; and Kirsten Dinnall Hoyte, whose first book, Black Marks, powerfully traces a young woman’s search for her identity.

Thursday, May 11, at 6:30pm

Soft Skull Press publisher Richard Eoin Nash will emcee a program that focuses on two Soft Skull authors. The press is regarded as one of the most visible and valued alternative houses in the nation. The writers taking part are Mark Swartz and Lynne Tillman. Mark Swartz’s first book was described by Kirkus Reviews as "fascinating"; his latest book is H20, set in the bleak, waterless future of 2020. Lynne Tillman is the critically acclaimed author of American Genius, A Comedy, an enthralling and hilarious story of obsession.

Tuesday, June 6, at 6:30pm

Archipelago Books strives to locate, support, and preserve literary talent worldwide and allow it to enter the American bloodstream, publishing contemporary and classic works from around the world. For this program, publisher Jill Schoolman will discuss the challenges of publishing international literature with Michael F. Moore, Director of the PEN Translation Committee, Peter Wortsman, who translated Posthumous Papers of a Living Author by Robert Musil, and Mark Polizzotti, translator of Yann Andrea Steiner by Marguerite Duras.

This series is supported with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), a state agency.
