The 2004-05 General Society Lecture Series LITERATURE The New Yorker Here and Now The New Yorker has been an influential magazine in this country for the past eighty years. This series of five lectures with editors and writers associated with the magazine will illustrate the vital role The New Yorker plays in contemporary life and how it has not only maintained, but also increased, its relevance and popular appeal. Speakers include: Bob Mankoff, Cartoon Editor; Hendrik Hertzberg, Senior Editor; David Remnick, Editor; Adam Gopnik, Staff Writer; and Susan Morrison, who edits The Talk of The Town, along with two contributors to the section. LABOR New York Under Construction Bridges, tunnels, and the public water system are the lifelines of New York. These systems, along with housing, have been under construction for more than a century. The speakers in our Labor series examine the challenges which faced the designers, explore the legacy of past practices for future plans, and illuminate the way that each generation labors to improve the quality of urban life. LANDMARKS New York City Styles The first 40 years of the 20th century were a transformation time in New York City. Above and below ground vast building projects profoundly altered cityscapes and new styles emerged, replacing the varied vocabularies of the 19th century with new visions. At the start of that period, the new subway system was graced with fine craft and design, and later a quintessentially 20th century-style emerged. This year's series begins on October 19. All lectures are held in the General Society building at 20 West 44th Street (between 5th and 6th Avenues) in New York City on Tuesday evenings and begin at 6 pm. Admission is $15, $10 for members and $5 for students. For reservations or more information, please call the Society at 212.840.1840. To request a brochure for the lecture series, please click here.
