Past Times and The New York Times
Arthur Gelb, former Managing Editor
Arthur Gelb was hired by The New York Times as a copyboy in 1944. When he retired 45 years later, he was Managing Editor, and had played a pivotal role in the development of the newspaper. In the intervening decades, Mr. Gelb, at the heart of the newsroom as both reporter and editor, astutely observed the significant events that shaped the newspaper, city and country. He is the author of City Room, the lively and critically acclaimed memoir about The Times.

Arts and Cultutal Coverage at The Times
Sam Sifton, Cultural Editor
Since becoming Cultural Editor in May 2005, Sam Sifton has brought his enthusiasm, vision and journalistic skills to help revitalize and expand the multifaceted cultural section of The Times. While other newspapers have had to slash their cultural reporting, the policy of The Times has been to increase coverage of the arts. Mr. Sifton will discuss his efforts to strengthen cultural news coverage, reflect on his first months, and outline his ideas for the future.

Reflections on the Theater, Critics and Criticism

Ben Brantley, Chief Theater Critic
Ben Brantley joined The Times as a theater critic in 1993, and four years later became the Chief Theater Critic. An award-winning writer, he is renowned for his eloquent prose and for his flair for capturing the essence of a theatrical production. He is regarded as the most influential theater critic in the country. Mr. Brantley will talk about his experiences as a critic in relation to the whole spectrum of criticism, and reflect on how theater, especially on Broadway, has changed and evolved.

Jill Abramson, Managing Editor
The Future of The New York Times
An award-winning journalist and former Times Washington Bureau Chief, Jill Abramson was appointed Managing Editor in 2003. Ms. Abramson will discuss some of the newspaper’s future plans. Among the topics she will cover are: the paper’s increased emphasis on national circulation; electronic news and the impact of digital technology on The Times; new ventures planned by the paper; and her vision for The Times’ future.
