New from the Independent Publishing World

Small Publisher Files Suit Against the Library of Congress
"Publishers Weekly" has reported in their August 8th issue that Lev Tsitrin, author of The Pitfall of Truth, is suing the Library of Congress over its rule that a publisher must have published the work of at least three different authors before it's titles will be included in the Library's catalogue. Tsitrin contends that he is suing The Library in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, because the three-author requirement is a violation of his First Amendment rights. The Library of Congress explains, on it's website, that it does not have the resources to catalogue every self-published release and limits itself "to works most likely to be widely acquired by U.S. libraries."

Small Press Novel Makes Waves in Hollywood
Oh Pure and Radiant Heart (Soft Skull Press) Lydia Millett's novel about time travel, nuclear holocaust and Oppenheimer is turning heads in tinsel town following rave reviews in Vanity Fair and Entertainment Weekly. There are rumors of talks of an adaptation with Section 8, the production company founded by George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh.

Independent Press Suddenly Tied to Major Motion Picture
Chicago based press Surrey Books, which releases about 10 titles a year, has found itself with a potentially lucrative license from MGM to publish a Pink Panther book. What makes this license especially promising is that MGM is planning on releasing a new Pink Panther movie with Beyonce and Steve Martin. Unfortunately for Surrey, MGM was bought by Sony and the movie, scheduled for release this summer, was pushed back until February. Now Surrey is delaying the release of the book, The Pink Panther Entertains until January.

Jane Austen, Self-Publishing and Simon & Schuster
Self-Published author Pamela Mogen, who goes by the alias Pamela Aidan, had put out two books in her series that imagines Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" from the perspective of Mr. Darcy, when she was approached by the Simon & Schuster imprint, Touchstone. Touchstone offered to release Pamela's two novels as well as put out a third novel in 2007. Despite her success, Pamela, staying true to her roots, will actually self-publish her new novel the summer before it is released by Touchstone.

Major Authors Supports Independent Publisher
Kurt Vonnegut, one of the world's most prestigious living authors, is a long time supporter of independent presses. Vonnegut has worked with Seven Stories press to release 3 novels including his newest, "A Man Without a Country", his first major work in 8 years. According to the Seven Stories Press website the book, culled from short stories and essays, features "Vonnegut both speaking out with indignation and writing tenderly to his fellow Americans".
